The gameplay itself is very GTA1, murder and mayhem in a top down perspective. The story itself is pretty entertaining but drags itself on a little more than it needs to, though I feel its the gameplay that makes me feel that way. The story spans across 3 major characters though one is largely a joke character. Its what kept me playing despite all the issues. It centers around a CEO that's behind the times of tech culture and all the scams and moneymakers the culture generates, taking things into his own hands he plans to salvage his business by any means necessary, and I do mean any.įirst things first, the humor in this game is stellar, if not a little too on the nose of how fked our world has gotten, especially the jabs at video games. Shakedown Miami is a GTA 1 clone much like retro city rampage of the same developer before it. The game has a lot of issues, but ultimately bugs finally drug this one down into the pit of not recommended for me. It's basic, shallow, repetitive and boring. Despite all the care and love it received from its creators, despite all their efforts, the results sadly doesn't cut it. It pains me to give Shakedown Hawaii a negative review. But i still think it could have been miles better if the dev spent more time on polishing the gameplay and making better levels instead of delivering so much content. ![]() Maybe i'm too harsh and i'm asking too much from that little indie game. The story didn't convince me, it's some kind of teenage rant about modern capitalism through the lens of a boomer CEO using deceitful methods. Kindah satisfying at the beginning but annoying in the long run. You just spam the "buy" button and money multipliers to get richer and buy some more later. They're all purchasable, but owning one or a hundred of them has little to no effect on the gameplay. There are a considerable amount of properties scattered across the map. But there's hardly anything to do in it besides shooting NPCs and cops. The same goes for the open world, it's large and ripe with details, with lots of varied cool places. The sad thing about it is all the cool gameplay ideas that went completely underexploited or even scraped as soon as you encounter them. While i could forgive that kind of stuff in RCR back then, i just can't do it anymore here. In fact, they're often bad or poorly designed. Everything is just obscenely easy, there's no challenge at all. They're over before you even start having the slightest fun. Missions/levels are way too short (many don't even last a full minute). Graphics are still fantastic but the RCR magic is gone. But my expectations were too high, because all the flaws from RCR are still here, and they're worse. It took me a while to eventually try Shakedown Hawaii, it's more ambitious and aims to be a whacky 2D GTA. It wasn't perfect, but i had a blast playing it. I remember loving every single second of it, and it's one of the rare games i completed twice in the recent years. ![]() It's business in the front, and bodies in the back.
